Description

Miguel Alva from Annapolis MD just sent us an amazing description of Blue Mako:

Late last year I purchased an Orient CEM65002D AKA Blue Mako. When I first opened the box I was completely blown away by its deep beautiful blue color of the dial. The polished area on the case and bracelet were flawless. I took it out of the box and was amazed by the weight of this watch, a rock solid watch that is built like a tank.

The dial is absolutely breath taking. It is coated with lacquer or plastic coating that is adding shimmer to it change the color in different color. In certain lighting conditions it could get really deep bright blue to almost black in dimmed light conditions. The dial is very easy to read since the indices are chromed and filled with almost white illumination material. The hands are also chromed and filled with illuminating material.

The bezel is 60 clicks unidirectional with a blue insert and a PIP. The crown has the Orient symbol, and it is well protected by the case. It has three positions. Screwed down which is locked. First pull which will change the date. Second pull which will set the time. It is solid in operation and very smooth. The pusher is very solid as well. With a screw housing once opened, when pushing on the pusher it will change the day with very smooth operation.

The links for this bracelet are solid and uses split pins to connect the links. It is very sturdy yet extremely easy to size on you own. The links are brushed finished with polished sides. It adds a nice contrast and blends nicely with the case. The deployment closure is as smooth as it can get with a double locking feature and three micro adjustment places. Very easy to release and lock.

The lume is something I am excited about. Having said that I find it legible in complete darkness. It will glow for the night after a little bit of charging. This watch is worth every penny. The quality is superb, and the build is solid. The time keeping is surprisingly accurate at -3 sec/day which for an automatic is extremely good.

I hope you enjoy the little review.

Reviews

"I happened upon the Orient “Blue Mako” model number CEM65002D while searching for a new timepiece on the internet. After reading so many positive reviews of this watch the purchase was made and the excitement of waiting on the brown truck for my delivery began. Upon receiving the item and opening the signature box, there was no disappointment.

The weight of this beauty is significant but not overbearing and really is comfortable to wear all day. Overall the finish is well done, with no machine marks to notice. The impression is of quality throughout, along with top notch material used in manufacturing. I really like the duel screw down crowns that enhance the overall symmetry of the case. The day function at the 2 o clock position is easy to use by simply unscrewing the locking crown and pushing a button until the desired day appears (in English or Spanish). Synchronizing the time is intuitive by easily unscrewing the crown, pulling out and setting. The deep blue, complex dial seems to radiate energy with movement of the wrist and appears luminescent with varied light conditions. I think the Orient insignia at the 12 position is dignified and just the right size.

There are white numbers at the 12, 6 and 9 position which are complemented by easy-to-see white on silver hands. The sweeping second hand is finished with a thin, red point that looks quit natural and striking against the blue dial. After wearing the “Blue Mako” on a day-to-day basis, there is no question that it has very good accuracy, which may be attributed to the in-house, automatic movement Orient is famous for. Incidentally, it is significant these days to own a watch that is made entirely by a single manufacturer without parts being contracted out, and I believe this is a major factor in Orient’s quality assurance. The bracelet has just the right amount of shine and gives the impression of a brushed finish. There are multiple adjustments on the dual locking clasp, which is nice for sizing and I had no problem getting just the right fit.

Everything about the “Blue Mako” speaks of quality. All areas of the watch convey dedication of workmanship , which lead to pride of ownership, certainly traits one rarely finds at the purchase price point I paid for the watch. For the price conscious watch enthusiast in today’s economy one may be assured of getting his or her monies worth and then some when considering an Orient watch. I will certainly buy another with plans to keep each of my Orients for years to come!

"What captured me most about this watch and finally made up my mind to own one is the dial. I once saw it on one of the shop owner's hand and I couldn't take my eyes of the blue dial."

I received my CEM65002D Blue Mako as a Christmas present from my wife. It is my first Orient, and my first new automatic watch. From the moment I opened the outer cardboard box I was impressed. The inner box shows a lot of thought and care was put into it, with its brushed metal insert in the lid matching the brushed finish of the bracelet. When I opened it and first looked at the Mako, it was pure love. I picked it up out of the box to take it off its pillow, and that simple motion started the second hand sweeping around the dial. I put it on, and it fit almost perfectly without adjustment.

The first impression is that the Blue Mako is very classic in design, but it has a presence all its own. This watch is solid from case to clasp, and has enough weight to remind you it's on your wrist but not so much that it's burdensome. The case size is perfect for my average-sized wrist, and sits very comfortably. Overall fit and finish are excellent; the screw-down crown and pusher both worked very smoothly to set the date and time, and the 60-click unidirectional bezel is relatively easy to turn. The brush-finished bracelet has solid steel (rather than folded) links, and a double-pushbutton deployant clasp with the Orient logo and safety latch. The polished ends of the links are a classy touch.

But the most captivating part of this watch has to be the dial. It's a deep blue with a matching blue bezel, but it's like nothing I've ever seen in a watch face. It's an iridescent finish that leaps out at you, especially when viewed in sunlight. Most pictures don't do this dial justice, and it has to be seen in person to really appreciate it. After several tries, I did manage to get one wrist shot that I believe captures that iridescence pretty well, and have included it with this review (and for anyone who notices: yes, I did remove the small piece of plastic that was still hanging on the lower bracelet!).

Mechanically its accuracy is excellent, averaging +2 to +3 seconds per day over the short time I have owned it. The winding rotor is barely noticeable; if there is one feature I wish this watch had, it would be an exhibition caseback.

To sum it all up, the Blue Mako is a great-looking, great-feeling watch that you simply cannot go wrong by owning. I continue to be impressed with it every time I look at it...which is VERY often! It may be a while before I can purchase it, but I have already decided my next new watch will be its brother, the CEM65001B Black Mako.
